When to Go

Almaty has a continental climate with cold winters and hot summers. The mountains to the south create a local weather pattern that brings more snow and rain to the city than the surrounding steppe, but summers are dry and often very warm.

Spring (April–May) is one of the best times to visit. The wild apple and apricot orchards in the surrounding valleys bloom, the mountains are still snowcapped, and the city is at its greenest. Rainfall is higher but rarely persistent. The Nauryz holiday at the spring equinox (around March 21) brings outdoor celebrations, horse races, and Kazakh new year traditions to parks and public spaces.

Summer (June–August) is hot — temperatures regularly exceed 30°C in July — but evenings cool down quickly at the city's altitude. The mountain resorts and hiking trails are in peak season; Big Almaty Lake is accessible, and the bazaars overflow with Central Asian fruit. Outdoor concerts and festivals run through the warmer months.

Autumn (September–October) is excellent: warm days, cool nights, golden birch forests in the Ile-Alatau foothills, and the apple harvest in the surrounding orchards.

Winter (November–March) is cold, with temperatures dropping well below zero, but this is the ski season at Shymbulak and Medeu. The city has enough indoor attractions — museums, opera, bathhouses — to sustain a winter visit, and hotel prices are generally lower. Snow in the city itself is common from December onward.
