Panfilov Park is the green heart of central Almaty, occupying a long rectangular block between Gogol and Qazybek Bi streets. It was laid out in the late 19th century and still feels like a place meant for leisure: wide paths, old trees, and benches where locals read or feed pigeons on summer afternoons.
The park contains two monuments that make it more than just a pleasant green space. The Zenkov Cathedral stands at its centre — see the separate entry for details. At the north end, the Memorial to the 28 Panfilov Guardsmen features an Eternal Flame flanked by stone reliefs and a lane of pedestals bearing the names of the soldiers. The flame has burned continuously since 1975 and the memorial is a genuine site of collective memory, not merely a tourist attraction. The park is free to enter and open at all hours.
