Khan Tengri — the "Celestial Emperor" — stands on the border between Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, near their respective borders with China. One of the most famous peaks in the Tien Shan range, it is variously reported at 6,995 or 7,010 metres depending on whether the ice cap is included. The marble pyramid shape and the way it glows pink at sunset have made it the most celebrated mountain in Central Asia.
It is a serious mountaineering objective, attracting climbers from around the world. An international speed climbing festival is held periodically in its honour.
