Mashkhur Jusup Mosque

Mashkhur Jusup Mosque is Pavlodar's most recognisable building, with blue domes, slender minarets, and a large landscaped setting in the centre of the city. It is an active mosque, so visit respectfully and avoid prayer times if you only want to look around.

The building is modern rather than ancient, but it tells you something about Kazakhstan after independence: public religion, national culture, and civic architecture all sharing the same stage.

A story
The mosque is named for Mashkhur Jusup Kopeyuly, a Kazakh poet, historian, and religious scholar from the Pavlodar region. Its scale and central placement make it both a place of worship and a statement of post-Soviet Kazakh identity in a heavily Russian-speaking city.
