Salmiya's sights are modest compared to Kuwait City, but a handful are worth the trip. The Kuwait Scientific Centre is the standout — a waterfront complex housing the largest aquarium in the Middle East, a discovery centre, and an IMAX cinema, all behind a striking facade decorated in Arabic calligraphy. Allow half a day. Salem Al-Mubarak Street is the oldest and largest shopping district in the country, and still retains something of the old souk character among the glass-fronted stores — gold and fabric shops tucked between the chains. Marina World, with its glass-pyramid mall and the waterfront Marina Crescent promenade, is where Salmiya's evening social life happens. The Salmiya Beach along Marina Bay is particularly pretty at sunset.
