Sulaiman-Too Museum

The National Historical and Archaeological Museum Complex Sulaiman is a museum carved into the side of Sulaiman-Too. Its galleries display the petroglyphs, ceramics, jewellery and weapons recovered from around the mountain, with explanatory panels in Russian, Kyrgyz and (sometimes) English.

The real attraction, beyond the collection, is the cave itself — a long, naturally lit chamber that opens out through the brutalist concrete facade visible from the city below. After the museum, follow the path up the mountain to see the petroglyphs in their original positions and to look down on Osh from the summit shrine.

A story
The museum is built directly into a natural cave on the mountain's eastern flank. Its concrete frontage — all curves and chamfered windows — is a striking example of late-Soviet brutalism dropped onto a sacred Islamic site. It was completed in 1978 to mark Osh's 3,000th anniversary, and it remains one of the strangest pieces of architecture in Central Asia.
