The best time to visit is the dry season, from November to April. Temperatures are comfortable, roads are passable, and the rivers are lower — which makes the waterfalls of the Bolaven Plateau easier to reach and the 4,000 Islands more scenic.
The wet season (May to October) brings heavy rain and occasional flooding. The Bolaven Plateau loop becomes muddy and difficult. On the other hand, the Mekong is at its highest and most impressive, and Wat Phu can feel atmospheric in light rain with fewer visitors.
December and January are the coolest months, with temperatures on the plateau dropping to 15°C at night. March and April are hot and dry before the monsoon breaks — Pakse itself can reach 35°C. The Bolaven coffee harvest runs from October to December, and some plantations welcome visitors during this period.
The Wat Phu Festival in January or February (on the full moon of the third lunar month) is the most important religious event in the region, drawing pilgrims and featuring traditional music, boat racing, and buffalo fighting near the temple.
