The Presidential Palace (Hor Kham, or Golden Palace) is one of the grandest French Beaux-Arts buildings in Southeast Asia, finished in 1973 just before the monarchy fell. It was intended for King Sisavang Vatthana, who never moved in — the Pathet Lao took power in 1975 and the king was sent to a re-education camp where he later died.
The building is not open to the public; the current president uses it for ceremonial functions. You can admire the long colonnaded façade and the manicured lawns from outside the wrought-iron gates. It sits on Setthathirath Road next to Haw Phra Kaew and across from Wat Si Saket, so most visitors walk past it as part of the temple loop.
