Pha That Luang

Laos's gold-covered national stupa, symbol of the nation

The most important national monument in Laos, Pha That Luang is a gold-covered Buddhist stupa that appears on the national seal and currency. Originally built in the 3rd century, it was rebuilt in 1566 by King Setthatirat and restored in 1935 after being ransacked by invaders. The stupa sits 3 kilometres north of the city center, surrounded by a cloister with Buddha images. The That Luang Festival in November is the largest religious festival in Laos.
