Bekaa Kafra

Bekaa Kafra is a small village about 2 km south of Bcharre, and at around 1,750 m it claims the title of highest village in the Middle East. It is also the birthplace of Saint Charbel Makhlouf, the nineteenth-century Maronite monk and hermit who is one of the most venerated figures of the Lebanese church.

The village preserves Saint Charbel's family home as a small museum, and there is a modern church and pilgrimage shrine on the hillside. It is a short detour from Bcharre and a pleasant walk in summer through orchards and stone houses. Don't expect much in the way of services — there are a couple of cafes by the church and that's it.
