Mar Lichaa (or Saint Elisha) is the easiest of the Qadisha monasteries to reach from Bcharre — about thirty minutes' walk down a switchback path. The monastery is partly cave and partly stone-built, clinging to the valley wall, and includes a small museum of monastic life.
It is worth a visit on its own and also makes the natural first stage of the longer Qadisha walk. A handful of Lebanese Maronite hermits still live in the surrounding caves, following a contemplative rule that has been continuous in this valley for around fifteen centuries. The monastery courtyard, with its view straight out over the gorge, is a good place to sit for a while.
