Our Lady of Lebanon (Harissa)

The Shrine of Our Lady of Lebanon at Harissa is a Marian shrine on a hilltop overlooking Jounieh Bay, one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Lebanon and the Middle East. The centrepiece is a white statue of the Virgin Mary, 8.5 metres tall and cast in bronze, standing on top of a neo-Gothic basilica built into the hillside. The statue's arms are outstretched over the bay below.

Reached either by the Téléphérique from Jounieh or by road from the Jounieh-Byblos highway, the shrine attracts pilgrims of both Christian and Muslim faiths — interfaith devotion to the Virgin is notably common in Lebanon. A ramp spirals around the base of the statue, and climbing to its upper level brings you level with the hands. The view down over Jounieh Bay and along the coast, particularly at sunset, is among the finest in Lebanon.

A story
The statue at Harissa was cast in bronze in Lyon, France, and shipped to Lebanon in pieces in 1904. It took years to raise funds and assemble. When Pope John Paul II visited in 1997, he climbed the ramp around the statue's base — a narrow spiral that brings you increasingly close to the outstretched hands.
