Khan es-Saboun

Smaller Ottoman caravanserai once used for soap trade, now housing artisan workshops

Khan es-Saboun — the Soap Khan — is a smaller Ottoman caravanserai near the centre of the old town, originally used by merchants dealing in Sidon's famous olive-oil soap. The building is less grand than the Khan el-Franj, but its restoration has been thoughtful and it now houses a cluster of artisan workshops, a small cafe, and occasional cultural events.

The two-storey courtyard structure is typical of Ottoman commercial architecture: arcaded galleries, central fountain, robust stone vaulting designed to last for centuries. Wandering through, you can watch craftsmen at work — carpenters, leather workers, the occasional weaver — in much the same configuration the building was designed for four hundred years ago.
