Hin Bus Depot

Disused bus depot turned arts complex, craft market and food hub

Hin Bus Depot is a 1947 bus terminal that fell out of use in the 1990s and was converted in 2014 into one of Penang's most active contemporary arts spaces. The old garages and waiting halls now house art galleries, designer-craft shops, a vegan café, several bars, and an open central courtyard with food trucks and irregular live music.

The complex hosts a popular Sunday pop-up market of independent makers, artists and bakers (10am-5pm), and an active schedule of contemporary art exhibitions in the central gallery — usually free to enter. Ernest Zacharevic's first "Boy on a Bike" mural is painted on a wall here, the seed of the whole Penang street-art movement. The bars and the courtyard fill up on weekend evenings with a young Penang crowd and travellers; weekday afternoons are quiet and pleasant for a wander.

A 10-minute walk from the Komtar tower or 5 minutes from the Chulia Street area. Free to enter; you pay for whatever you eat or drink.
