Beaches

Kota Bharu's beaches have gorgeous powdery sand, but strong surf and coastal erosion have taken a toll on some stretches. Swimming can be hazardous at several spots due to powerful currents. The beaches are best enjoyed for strolling, seafood stalls, and the breeze rather than swimming.

Pantai Cahaya Bulan (Beach of Passionate Love) is the most famous, lined with food stalls serving local seafood. The currents are too strong for safe swimming, but locals and visitors happily walk the shoreline. The beach was originally known as PCB Beach before receiving its more romantic name.

Pantai Dasar Sabak, about 13 km from the city, is where the Japanese landed in December 1941 to begin their invasion of Malaya. Today it is a quiet stretch near a fishing village where you can swim, snorkel, and buy fresh seafood. The surrounding countryside is beautiful.

Other beaches along the coast include Pantai Irama, Pantai Bisikan Bayu, and Pantai Seri Tujuh, each with its own character but all sharing the same fine sand and sea breeze.
