Pantai Cahaya Bulan is Kota Bharu's most famous beach, about 10 kilometres north of the city centre. The sand is powdery and the sea is a vivid turquoise, but the currents along this stretch of coast are strong — swimming can be dangerous, particularly between November and March when the northeast monsoon brings heavy surf. The beach is better enjoyed for what it is: a beautiful place to walk, watch fishermen haul in their nets, and eat fresh seafood from the stalls that line the shore.
The evening atmosphere is particularly good. Stalls set up as the sun drops, selling grilled fish, kelapa muda (young coconut), and local snacks. Families spread mats on the sand and the mood is relaxed and entirely local. To reach the beach, take a taxi from the city centre or catch a local bus from the Langgar bus terminal.
