Kota Kinabalu City Mosque

The Kota Kinabalu City Mosque, known locally as the Floating Mosque, sits on a platform above the lagoon at Likas Bay. From a distance it genuinely appears to hover on the water, making it one of the most photographed buildings in Sabah. The mosque was completed in 2000 and can hold 12,000 worshippers.

Non-Muslim visitors are welcome outside of prayer times. Modest dress is required — robes are available at the entrance if needed. The best photographs are taken from the causeway approach in the late afternoon, when the light is golden and the reflection in the lagoon is clearest.

A story
Unlike most mosques, this one appears to float — it is built on a platform over a lagoon in Likas Bay, so at high tide the building seems to rise directly from the water. The effect is especially dramatic at dusk when the white dome and four minarets are reflected in the still surface of the bay.
