Kota Kinabalu punches well above its weight for outdoor activities. The five islands of Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park are reachable by speedboat in 15 minutes for snorkelling and beach time, while Lok Kawi Wildlife Park offers close encounters with pygmy elephants and proboscis monkeys. Serious hikers come from across Asia to climb Mount Kinabalu, with most doing the two-day ascent from Kinabalu Park.
In the city itself, the Atkinson Clock Tower and Signal Hill Observatory Platform give historical context and the best views. The Kota Kinabalu City Mosque and Sabah State Mosque are both open to visitors outside prayer times. The Sabah State Museum and Sabah Islamic Civilisation Museum cover the culture and history of the state. For something more theatrical, the Mari Mari Cultural Village recreates the traditional longhouses and daily life of Sabah's five main indigenous groups.
