White Water Rafting on Sungai Selangor

The Sungai Selangor provides some of the best white water rafting in Malaysia, with a stretch of rapids running through jungle gorges that are accessible from KKB. Several operators are based in town, running half-day and full-day trips that take you through rapids graded from beginner to intermediate, surrounded by unbroken rainforest. The trips are suitable for families with older children as well as experienced paddlers.

The river is at its best in the wetter months (September to January) when the flow is higher and the rapids more energetic. In drier months the water drops and the rapids become more technical. Most operators provide all equipment and transport to the put-in point; trips typically last three to four hours on the water. Book at least a day ahead, especially at weekends.

A story
The river that gives Selangor state its name rises in the mountains above KKB and runs through jungle that is largely unchanged from when the British first came here. Early British administrators wrote about the area's remoteness in the 1880s, and the forest-lined gorges that make the rafting so dramatic are still as wild as they appear — this stretch of river runs through the Batang Padang Forest Reserve and is protected from development.
