Jalan Alor

Bukit Bintang's famous hawker street serving Chinese seafood, satay, and fresh fruit juice each evening

The most famous open-air food street in KL, a long block off Jalan Bukit Bintang lined with Chinese-Malay seafood restaurants that set up tables down the middle of the road every evening. The atmosphere is the point: red lanterns overhead, the rattle of woks, hawkers carrying barbecue smoke past your shoulder, the heat dropping a few degrees after dark.

Specialities to order: grilled stingray with sambal, salt-baked tiger prawns, char kuey teow (smoky wide-noodle stir-fry), chicken wings at Wong Ah Wah at the far end (the standout name on the street), and ais kacang shaved ice for dessert. Prices have crept up over the years — this is a tourist destination as much as a local one now — but the food remains very good for the money. Open from late afternoon till past midnight.
