Day Trips

KL is a good base for cooler hill stations and historic colonial towns within a few hours' drive. Fraser's Hill and the Cameron Highlands are old British retreats high enough to need a sweater at night. Melaka (Malacca), the UNESCO-listed Portuguese-Dutch-British colonial port, is two hours south by bus, and Ipoh, the cave-temple city of the Kinta Valley, is two hours north on the ETS train. Closer in, Putrajaya — Malaysia's planned administrative capital — sits between KL and the airport, worth a half-day for its bridges and pink-domed mosque. For a shorter outing, the Batu Caves Hindu shrine is only 13 km north of the centre.
