Masjid India Mosque

Original Indian Muslim mosque from 1907 that gave the Masjid India neighbourhood its name

The Masjid India mosque — officially Masjid Jamek Kampung Baru or sometimes simply the Masjid India — is the modest two-storey mosque at the heart of the neighbourhood that gave it its name. Built in the early 20th century by South Indian Muslim (Tamil Muslim, or Mamak) merchants who settled the surrounding trading district, it remains an active community mosque serving the area's Muslim residents and traders.

The mosque is not a major tourist sight in itself — that role belongs to the grander Masjid Jamek nearby — but it's worth pausing at the entrance to appreciate the neighbourhood's history. On Friday afternoons, worshippers overflow from the mosque into the surrounding streets, and the whole area fills with street food vendors catering to the lunch crowd. The surrounding market lanes are at their most vibrant on Friday midday.
