KL Tower

421-metre telecommunications tower with an outdoor observation deck and revolving restaurant at 335 metres

The 421-metre Menara Kuala Lumpur — the KL Tower — rises from Bukit Nanas hill and is one of the tallest freestanding towers in the world. The observation deck at 276 metres is open daily, and the rotating Atmosphere 360 restaurant a level above gives the same view with dinner attached. Many visitors prefer the view from here to the Petronas Skybridge, because from up here you can actually see the Petronas Towers themselves.

The base of the tower sits inside the KL Forest Eco Park — a 9-hectare patch of primary rainforest that has been protected since 1906, complete with canopy walkway. The whole package — tower, forest, viewpoints — makes for a satisfying half-day, and the queues are usually shorter than at the Twin Towers.

A story
The tower's construction in 1994 was complicated by the protected rainforest at its base. A 100-year-old jelutong tree was deemed too important to fell, so the foundations were rerouted around it at a cost of around RM 430,000.
