Madam Kwan's

Malaysian restaurant known for nasi bojari, roti jala, and traditional laksa, popular with locals since 1994

A reliable mid-priced Malaysian restaurant chain that started in 1999 and is now a fixture in most of the city's bigger malls. The Suria KLCC branch is the original. The menu sticks to the Malaysian classics done well — nasi lemak (with chicken curry, beef rendang or grilled chicken), nasi bojari with the rainbow rice, char kuey teow, and a strong drinks list of fresh juices and the iced jelly drink cendol.

Madam Kwan herself, Kwan Swee Lian, was a real person — a Chinese-Malaysian restaurateur who built the brand on the strength of her own kitchen recipes before selling it on. The cooking is honest, the portions generous, and it is one of the safer bets for a first encounter with Malaysian food. Mains RM 25-40. Reservations not normally needed.
