About 25 kilometres southwest of Kuantan, a dramatic limestone cliff rises out of the flat Pahang landscape and harbours one of the region's most atmospheric sites. Gua Charas — Charas Cave — contains a series of caverns that Orang Asli communities used long before Thai Buddhist monks established a temple inside in the 1950s. The walk up through the rock involves a short scramble on iron ladders and narrow passages, opening into a high cave with a reclining Buddha carved from the limestone and several smaller shrines.
The cave is active as a place of worship and genuinely atmospheric — cool, dimly lit, and smelling of incense and bat guano in roughly equal measure. A longer passage at the rear leads further into the cliff if you have a torch. The easiest way to get here is by taxi or Grab from Kuantan; the journey takes around 30 minutes. Combine it with the nearby craft village at Sungai Lembing if you have a full day.
