Teluk Cempedak Beach

Sheltered bay with calm water a few kilometres from the city centre

Kuantan's main beach sits about five kilometres east of the city centre, a genuine bay rather than an exposed stretch of coast. The headlands on either side break the swell, making the water calmer than at most east-coast Malaysian beaches. The sand is pale and wide at low tide, and the promontory to the north has a short trail through secondary forest to a viewpoint.

A string of hotels, food stalls, and restaurants lines the back of the beach, ranging from fresh-coconut carts to sit-down seafood. The beach is busiest on weekends and during school holidays, when families from Kuantan and Pahang's interior fill it. Outside those periods, it is pleasant and uncrowded. Avoid the months of November to February when the northeast monsoon brings rain and rough surf.

A story
Teluk Cempedak — Cempedak Bay, named after a fruit tree — was once a quiet fishing beach before the Hyatt arrived in the 1980s and put it on the tourist map. Unlike the long exposed strands further up the coast, the bay is naturally sheltered by headlands on both sides, which keeps the water calmer than elsewhere on Pahang's coast even during the northeast monsoon season.
