Danzandarjaa Monastery

Active Buddhist monastery rebuilt after the 1937 purges

A small, working Buddhist monastery on the western edge of Mörön, rebuilt in 1990 to replace the much larger Möröngiin Khüree complex destroyed in the 1937 purges. A handful of monks live and study here; the main hall holds painted thangkas, a gilded Buddha, and the usual rows of butter lamps. Quiet, weathered, and dignified — the kind of place you sit in for ten minutes and then leave without speaking.

Best visited mid-morning when chanting is going on.

A story
The original Möröngiin Khüree housed several thousand monks until the Stalinist purges of 1937, when it was burned and most of the monks executed or imprisoned. The current small temple, rebuilt in the early 1990s, stands as an act of restoration on the same ground.
