Things to Do

Mörön itself takes an afternoon. The provincial museum on the central square is small but holds a good collection of Khövsgöl ethnography — Tsaatan reindeer-herder gear, Buryat costumes, archaeological finds from nearby deer stones. Danzandarjaa monastery on the western edge of town is a quiet 1990s rebuild of the much larger pre-1937 complex that was destroyed in the Stalinist purges. The real attraction, though, is everything beyond town: Lake Khövsgöl, Uushgiin Uver deer stones, and the Tsaatan camps in the taiga.
