Mangyongdae is a suburb west of Pyongyang, on the banks of the Taedong River, known as the birthplace of Kim Il-sung. The site has been maintained as a shrine: a simple thatched farmhouse where the founding leader was born in 1912, surrounded by trees and kept immaculately. Visitors are expected to bow.
The surrounding area has been developed into the Mangyongdae Children's Palace — a large extracurricular activities centre for selected children — and the Mangyongdae Funfair with rides and attractions. The funfair is one of the places in Pyongyang where you can observe families spending leisure time in something like a natural setting.
Mangyongdae is a short drive from central Pyongyang and is included on virtually every tour itinerary.
