Jhelum-Neelum Confluence

Striking meeting point of the blue Neelum and the Jhelum rivers at the city center

The point where the Neelum River joins the Jhelum is the geographical heart of Muzaffarabad. The two rivers run at different speeds and carry different colors — the Neelum a vivid blue-green, the Jhelum more turbid and grey-brown — and the line between them is clearly visible where they meet.

There are viewpoints from the riverbanks and from the hilltop near the Red Fort. This confluence has been a strategic and culturally significant spot for centuries, which is why the fort was built here in the first place. It is one of those places that is more dramatic than any description suggests.

A story
The Neelum River takes its name from the Urdu and Hindi word for sapphire — the river's distinctive blue-green color comes from glacial meltwater carrying fine suspended silt from high in the mountains. Where it meets the siltier Jhelum, the two waters run side by side in visible contrast before mixing a short distance downstream.
