By air. Islamabad International Airport at Fateh Jang, about 25 km west of the city, has direct flights from London, Dubai, Doha, Istanbul, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Beijing, Riyadh and most major Pakistani cities. The airport opened in 2018 to replace the old Benazir Bhutto International, which had become badly overstretched. Taxi to the city centre takes about 45 minutes; the ride from a major hotel desk is around Rs 3,000 — book through your hotel or use Careem.
By road. The M2 motorway connects Islamabad to Lahore in about four hours. The N5 Grand Trunk Road continues to Peshawar in the west and (via Lahore) to the Wagah border with India. Coaches from Daewoo Express and Faisal Movers are the standard intercity option — comfortable, on-time and bookable online.
By train. Pakistan Railways' main station is in Rawalpindi, 15 km south of central Islamabad. The Karachi Express (overnight) and the Tezgam reach Karachi in around 20 hours. The Khyber Mail runs to Peshawar.
