Lok Virsa Museum

Address Garden Avenue, Shakarparian

The Lok Virsa, or National Institute of Folk and Traditional Heritage, is Pakistan's ethnographic museum. The galleries trace the country's many cultures — Punjabi, Sindhi, Baloch, Pashtun, Kashmiri, Kalash, Hunza — through clothes, jewellery, household objects, musical instruments, mock-ups of village interiors and life-size dioramas.

It is one of the most rewarding museums in Pakistan and the easiest way to get a sense of the country's range of peoples in a single visit. Allow about two hours. The associated craft village outside the main building runs occasional weekend festivals with live music, food and craft demonstrations.

A story
The museum's permanent collection includes the personal household objects of the late Sufi musician Pathanay Khan, donated by his family, and a full reconstructed Kalash bridal chamber from the Hindu Kush — both arranged so a visitor can step inside and touch.
