Kunhar River Trout Fishing

The Kunhar River runs the entire length of Kaghan Valley and holds one of the best wild trout populations in Pakistan. The stretch from Naran northwards is particularly productive, with brown trout and rainbow trout in the cold, clear water. The fishing season runs from April to September, and the river is well enough known among Pakistani anglers that it draws serious fishermen from Lahore and Islamabad who come specifically for the trout rather than the scenery.

Permits are required and are issued by the Fisheries Department in Naran and the village of Shinu further up the valley. Rods, lines, and basic tackle can sometimes be hired locally, though bringing your own is safer. Fly fishing and spin fishing are both practiced; the upper river above Batakundi, away from the heaviest tourist traffic, tends to give better results. The best fishing is typically early morning and late evening, when the water is coldest and the midday crowds of the tourist season have cleared from the banks.
