Bars and Cafes

Pakistan is officially a dry country, and Lahore has no public bars in the European sense. Alcohol is served only at international-class hotels (the Pearl Continental, Avari, and a few others) to non-Muslim residents with permits, foreign passport holders, and registered guests. Outside those bars, the city's drinking culture is largely about tea.

The cafe scene is strong. Pak Tea House on the Mall has been the city's literary cafe since 1940; Coffee Tea & Co. is a more contemporary chain. M.M. Alam Road in Gulberg has the best concentration of modern cafes — espresso bars, dessert spots, late-night shisha lounges (where smoking is legal but increasingly discouraged).
