A story
When Ranjit Singh captured Lahore in 1799 he made the fort his royal residence; on his death in 1839, four of his queens and seven of his concubines committed sati on his funeral pyre in what is now the Hazuri Bagh outside the gates. The marble platform on which they burned is still set into the floor of the Samadhi of Ranjit Singh next door.
