Eating Out

Peshawar is one of the best cities in Pakistan for food, and one of the most underrated in Asia. The cuisine is Pashtun — heavy on meat, bread, and spice, built around the tandoor and the charcoal grill. The centrepiece is the chapli kebab: a flat, wide disc of minced beef or mutton mixed with coriander, chilli, and pomegranate seeds, fried in fat and served on naan. Namak Mandi street, in the old city, is the place to eat them — a row of open-fronted restaurants running charcoal fires from noon until late.

Peshawari naan is a sweet stuffed bread — richer and larger than any naan you'll find to the south — eaten hot from the tandoor with sweet tea. For a full meal, karahi (meat cooked in a wok with tomatoes and spices) is the local standard.

Alcohol is not available in Peshawar. Restaurants are generally family-friendly.
