Shopping

Peshawar is one of the great bazaar cities of Asia, and shopping here means buying things that have arrived overland from Afghanistan, Central Asia, and China — not souvenirs mass-produced for tourists. The old city is the place to look: Qissa Khwani Bazaar for atmosphere and general goods; the lanes off it for copper, leather, and embroidery.

Peshawari chappals — flat leather sandals in the local style — are an obvious buy, available in the lanes around Qissa Khwani. Dried fruit and nuts (mulberries, apricots, walnuts, pistachios) from Afghanistan and the Khyber come in at prices far lower than anywhere to the south. Afghan antiques and tribal jewellery — usually silver, sometimes ancient — can be found at shops in Ander Shahar, west of Chowk Yadgar; quality and provenance vary widely.

The Sethi Mohallah area has small craft shops selling embroidered cloth and woodwork.
