Getting Around

The old city is best explored on foot — the lanes around Qissa Khwani Bazaar are too narrow for vehicles in places, and walking is the only way to see properly. Wear comfortable shoes; the streets are uneven.

Rickshaws (auto-rickshaws) are the standard urban transport. Fares are low and the drivers generally honest; agree a price before you go. For longer trips within the city, taxis are available at major hotels and can be hired by the hour.

Chingchis — motorised rickshaws seating several passengers — run fixed routes through the city at very low fares, though they are confusing to use without Pashto or local knowledge.

The main Peshawar landmarks are reasonably compact: the museum, Bala Hisar Fort, the Mahabat Khan Mosque, and Qissa Khwani Bazaar are all within 3 km of each other in or near the old city. A rickshaw between them costs very little.
