The twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad share Islamabad International Airport (ISB), which opened in 2018 and handles most international and domestic flights. It sits on the outskirts of the capital and is accessible from both cities. PIA, Airblue, and Serene Air connect Islamabad to Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, Quetta, and Gilgit. International connections are limited but include flights to the Gulf states and some European destinations.
By rail, Rawalpindi Cantonment Station is a major stop on the Main Line 1, Pakistan's principal north-south railway. Trains run frequently to Lahore, with onward connections to Karachi. The journey to Lahore takes around four to five hours on an express service. For travel north toward Peshawar, Attock Bridge is the jumping-off point. Road connections are extensive: Rawalpindi's Pir Wadhai bus terminal dispatches coaches across the country, and shared taxis leave constantly for Islamabad (the two cities blur into each other), Murree, and Abbottabad.
