Sirsukh

The third and last city of Taxila, built by the Kushan rulers in the 1st century AD and abandoned within three hundred years when the White Huns swept down from Central Asia. Sirsukh sits a few kilometres north of Sirkap, on a flat plain enclosed by a thick rubble-and-mortar wall studded with semi-circular bastions — a defensive style borrowed wholesale from Central Asian fortifications.

The interior has been only partially excavated and there is little to see beyond the line of the walls and a few foundation outlines, but the scale of the wall — five kilometres around — gives a strong sense of the Kushan-era ambition. Visit Sirsukh last, after the museum and Sirkap, to round out the chronology of the three cities.
