Tel Rumeida

Tel Rumeida is a low hill on the western edge of Hebron's old city that has been continuously occupied since the Bronze Age. Excavations have revealed remains spanning 4,000 years: Canaanite walls, Iron Age levels, and material from the period of the biblical Kingdom of Judah. This is almost certainly the site of ancient Hebron — the city that, according to the Book of Genesis, Abraham chose as his base and where he negotiated the purchase of the Cave of Machpelah.

Access has been intermittent depending on security conditions in the area, which is in the Israeli-controlled H2 zone. The site sits adjacent to a small Israeli settlement. When accessible, the tel offers a view across the old city and the surrounding hills, as well as the chance to see exposed archaeological layers that make the age of Hebron tangible. Even from a distance, the escarpment gives a sense of the deep history of this place.
