The old city is the heart of Hebron and its most intense experience. The Cave of the Patriarchs — sacred to both Muslims and Jews as the burial site of Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Rebekah, Jacob, and Leah — sits at its centre, divided between a mosque and a synagogue with separate entrances and heavy security. Nearby, the Hebron Souq is one of the most atmospheric markets in the Palestinian territories, famous for hand-blown glass, pottery, and locally made leather. The Ibrahimi Mosque and Tel Rumeida archaeological site reveal layers going back thousands of years. Abraham's Oak, a massive ancient terebinth outside town, marks the traditional site where Abraham pitched his tent.
