Tappiya Falls

A 70-metre waterfall in a deep pool below Batad village, reached by an hour's hike on a stone path through the terraces. The walk down loses several hundred metres of elevation; the walk back is brutal, especially in the heat. But the pool at the bottom is cold and deep, you can swim, and at midweek you may have it more or less to yourself. Local guides from Batad are mandatory and charge a flat rate per group.

Bring water, sun cream, and shoes you do not mind getting wet. The path is slippery in rain, and the last section involves clambering over boulders. Allow at least four hours for the round-trip from Batad village including swimming time. Some travellers combine the falls with a night in Batad and continue back to Banaue the next morning.
