Dagupan Cathedral (Metropolitan Cathedral of St John the Evangelist)

The Metropolitan Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Lingayen–Dagupan sits in the centre of town, on the same site that has held the parish church since the Spanish founded it in the early 17th century. The current building is a 1990s restoration of the 1924 reconstruction — a wide, pale-yellow façade in transitional Hispanic style, with a single bell tower set back from the front.

Inside, the carved silver altar from the 17th century is the standout. Sunday Masses are crowded; weekday mornings are calm. Worth half an hour combined with a wander through the surrounding plaza.

A story
The original cathedral here was built in 1614 but was destroyed three separate times — by earthquake in 1788, by fire in 1924, and by the 1990 Luzon earthquake. The current restored building reopened in 1991, conserving the colonial-era altar that survived all three disasters.
