Day Trips

Negros Oriental's position in the central Visayas makes it a natural hub for island-hopping. Fast ferries connect Dumaguete to three very different destinations within a few hours.

Siquijor is the closest and the most atmospheric: a small island with a reputation for shamans and folk magic that it wears lightly, plus good beaches, a laid-back pace, and waterfalls in the interior. The ferry takes about an hour. It is easy to do as a day trip but worth staying overnight if the schedule allows.

Bohol is larger and richer in sights: the Chocolate Hills in the interior, the tiny tarsiers at the Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary, colonial churches, and the Loboc River. The ferry from Dumaguete to Tagbilaran takes around two and a half hours, which makes a day trip tight but possible. Better to go for two nights.

Cebu City, two to three hours by fast ferry, is the region's urban centre — larger, louder, and more commercially overwhelming than Dumaguete. It makes for a day trip if you need a city fix or have business there, but most travellers find Dumaguete's pace preferable.
