Prince Sultan Grand Mosque

Massive arched mosque in northern Khobar, capacity 24,000

The Prince Sultan Grand Mosque is the second of Khobar's two major mosques and the larger of the two by far, with capacity for 24,000 worshippers across the main hall, the women's gallery and the outer courtyard. Opened in 2007 and named after the long-serving crown prince, it stands on a large landscaped site in the north of the city.

Architecturally it draws on the arched cloisters of the Mosque of the Prophet in Medina, with arcades of pale stone and several broad domes. The structure is at its most striking from a distance, particularly when lit at night. Outside Khobar's two big Eid prayers, the mosque rarely fills, but the size of the building gives a sense of the scale at which the city's authorities have built religious infrastructure in the last twenty years.
