Daegu is known for several regional dishes. Makchang-gui (grilled intestines) is the city's signature dish and almost unavoidable at Korean barbecue restaurants — an acquired taste for some. Napjak mandu (flat dumplings) are a Daegu specialty, and the city's spicy tteokbokki has a reputation for extra heat even by Korean standards.
The Dongseongno and Banwoldang areas have the greatest concentration of restaurants in the city, with everything from traditional Korean to Japanese and Western options. The food court in the basement of the department stores around Banwoldang station is a good option for a quick, inexpensive meal.
For a more local experience, the pojangmacha stalls around Seomun Market and the side streets off Dongseongno come alive in the evenings and offer some of the best street food in the city.
