Gyeongsang-gamyeong Park

Gyeongsang-gamyeong Park preserves the surviving buildings of the old provincial administrative compound (gamyeong) of the Joseon dynasty — the government seat for the Gyeongsang region for several centuries. The compound was the effective centre of power for all of what is now Gyeongbuk and Gyeongnam provinces, and the buildings that survive show the scale of Joseon bureaucratic architecture: large timber halls with stone platforms, painted eaves, and a formal courtyard layout.

The park sits in the middle of central Daegu, surrounded by the modern city, which makes the contrast particularly striking. The restored main hall (Seonhwadang) dates from the 17th century and is one of the better-preserved examples of Joseon administrative architecture in Korea. The park is shaded by old trees and is a pleasant place to sit in warm weather.

Admission is free. An interpretive centre explains the history of the gamyeong system in Korean and, to a lesser extent, English.
