Hongju Eupseong Fortress is the historical anchor of Hongseong town. The remaining walls and gates are not a complete fortress circuit, but they still mark the old administrative heart of Hongju, the earlier name associated with the area.
It is worth seeing before heading out to the mountains or coast because it explains why a fairly ordinary county town has older bones. Treat it as a short walk rather than a full museum stop.
