Barefoot Gallery

Colombo's best gallery and craft shop — handloomed textiles, books, and a lovely courtyard cafe

Barefoot on Alfred House Road is the most pleasant place to spend an hour in Cinnamon Gardens — a combination of gallery, craft boutique, and courtyard cafe occupying a colonial house with shaded gardens. The textile collection is exceptional: handloomed fabrics designed by Barbara Sansoni in vivid Sri Lankan colours, sold by the metre or made into clothing, bags, and homewares. The books section has the best selection of Sri Lanka–related titles in Colombo.

The courtyard cafe serves good sandwiches, cakes, and cold drinks under the trees. The gallery space at the rear has rotating exhibitions of Sri Lankan and South Asian art. It's a civilised counterpoint to the chaos of the city outside, and a much better souvenir source than the tourist shops near the Fort.
